Conan Unchained
Published in Paperback by TSR Hobbies (July, 1984)
Author: David Cook
Average review score:

Conan for AD&D 1st edition
Conan Unchained! is an AD&D (1st edition) module for character levels 10-14. It is set in Robert E. Howard's world of the Hyborian Age, and is designed for use with four pre-generated characters: Conan, Nestor, Juma, and Valeria (though other characters can be substituted). The adventure itself pits the characters against an evil magic-user who has taken control of a Turanian city.

As a real bonus, this module contains information on running a campaign set in the Hyborian Age. Rules are given for "luck points" and fear factors. Also, information is given on the use of spell casters.

This module is absolutely a masterpiece. It is very well written, and has a lot of "goodies." If you can get this work, then do so!

The Cook
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (July, 1984)
Author: Harry Kressing

Anthony Bourdain, you would love this!
Sorry to rave about an out-of-print book, but this one will be well worth tracking down. You'll thank me!

I am wary of men who cook. Believe me, from personal experience. There is considerable power in the kitchen, which we girls have had wrenched from us. Our mothers were more fortunate. How I wish I could yell at a man, 'Your Supper's in the oven!' Alas, progress.

This story unfolds to the unsuspecting reader like a fairy tale, but it soon turns grim indeed, pun intended. Conrad is the chef who mysteriously arrives in town: 'Six and a half feet tall, clad in black and riding on a bicycle'. He not only knows exactly what he wants, but he knows what everyone else wants as well. He very quickly becomes the most feared and revered man in the town of Cobb. His power over women is to seduce them with his dark culinary art, make them totally dependent, and their waistlines are is then his. He is not a man to cross at the pub. Most macho cooks are good knife fighters. A particularly gruesome scene takes place when he takes on a rival chef who threatens to bone him like a chicken, butcher him like a hog...

Never underestimate a man who cooks, and cooks well. Had it been Eve and Conrad in the Garden of Eden, Conrad would have taken the apple, diced it with his glinting chef's knife and transformed it into Calvados.

Harry Kressing writes a dark tale indeed. He has been compared to Kafka and Orwell, and quite rightly so. The genre is fantasy for those who appreciate cuisine and has undeniable makings of a cult book. This is a dish which is still good and should be reheated. I wish some Evil Corporate Publisher would see his way to a reprint.

Cook 'Til Done?: Now You Too Can Prepare Authentic Italian Cuisine
Published in Spiral-bound by Southpaw Publishing (October, 1997)
Authors: Kimberly A. de Filippis, Joseph Defilippis, and Linda Riek
Average review score:

The ultimate guide to preparing AUTHENTIC Apulian cuisine
This is a thoughtful - and working - cookbook. It is trade PB size, to fit easily on the counter alongside the cooking paraphernalia. It has glossy paper covers that easily wipe clean. It is wire-bound AT THE BACK, so it lays totally flat, yet you can see the spine title when it is on the shelf. Finally, the dozens of authentic Southern Italian family recipes are augmented with charming anecdotes, sprinkled throughout the book, that communicate the very thought and feeling of Apulian cuisine. This book is a laborious, loving and accurate translation of old family recipes where the measurements often consisted of: "Some of this...", "A pinch of that...", and "How much? You know, just enough." I think that you will enjoy - and use - this book!

Pictorial Single Portion Recipes!
This is a wonderful cookbook that I am using to lead a weekly kindergarten cooking class. It has easy to understand pictures, so that the kids can "read" the recipes. The recipes are from around the world with at least 100 recipes. A detailed table of contents makes recipes easy to find.

Cook and Learn: Pictorial Single Portion Recipes: A Child's Cook Book (Book and Teacher's Guide)

Cook and Learn: Pictorial Single Portion Recipes
I have used this cook book with numerous groups of young children from 3-12 years old. When using this cookbook the children get to actually make their own food rather than pouring in one ingredient and stirring a little. The teachers guide is very helpful in showing tricks to make cooking activities safe for young children.

Another bonus is that the book is representative of foods from many cultures. One of my favorites is the crepe recipe which I have actually multipied to make at home for my family and friends.

Marie Louise is the tops!
Originally, I purchased this book to use as a doorstop, but during my 5 years in a Turkish prison with only back issues of High Lights and Industrial Plastics Weekly to read, I finally cracked it - and boy, was I surprised! Not your usual cookbook: Marie Louise's terrific recipes lay bare the basics (and many advanced techniques) for cooking Acadians, Cajuns, and a wide variety of other southern folks. Mmmm! Fried hamster was never this good.
